SMART Board Training for Schools

smart-technologies-logo-e1332173871603It is believed the SMART Board and the iPAD can serve as a motivational tool for learning and can also serve to address the varied student learning styles within the classroom.  Marzano, Frontier and Livingstone in Effective Supervision: Supporting the Art and Science of Teaching (2011) stress the need for teachers to plan for the use of both traditional materials and available technologies that enhance the student’s understanding of the content.

  • Over the past two years, YTC FNSSP purchased SMART Boards and iPADS (class sets for grades 3 and 6) for all five schools. For a technology to be effectively used in the school, all staff should be trained in their usage. To this end plans have been made to in-service more teachers on the use of SMART Boards and the grade 3 and 6 teachers on the use of iPADS.
  • Purchase of an additional five SMART Boards.
  • School will be asked to collect data on the effectiveness of technology in the classroom.
  • Purchase technician services to make the necessary repairs and adjustments to school SMART Boards and iPADS.

Results Achieved

  1. Participant evaluations of the SMART Board and iPAD in-services indicate staff are finding the sessions highly informative and staff are excited about using them for classroom instruction.
  2. School administrators indicate SMART Boards are highly used in the classrooms.
  3. Other classroom teachers (besides grade 3 and 6) are asking for iPADS for their classroom.
  4. The grade 3 and 6 teachers in four of the five schools have been in-serviced on the use of iPADs.
  5. The majority of staff in the four out of five schools that participate in the SMART Board in-services have been in-serviced on the use of the SMART board.

YTC FNSSP continues to provide professional development in classroom technology- we have procured the services of a technology consultant to: 1) in-service teachers on the effective use of iPADS, and 2) SMART Boards. To date the YTC FNSSP technology consultant has provided one round of iPAD in-servicing to grades 3 and 6 teachers in the southern schools and one round to the same group in the northern schools.

SMART Board Training is scheduled to take place for Alexis School on April 4, 2014 and will continue to be scheduled as schools are available.

PowerSchool is finally here!

Greetings everyone,

As part of YTC FNSSP’s Strategic Plan for improving education services, we have contracted Intellimedia Inc to provide training and technical support to implement PowerSchool in each of our schools.

What is Powerschool? PowerSchool is a web-based student information system that provides grade management and viewing for teachers and students alike. Using PowerSchool, teachers are able to record grades and attendance for students to view at home. It currently has. Retrieved December 8, 2012, from Pearson School Systems website: http://www.pearsonschoolsystems.com> Each student or teacher using PowerSchool has a password-protected account. Data uploaded by teachers is immediately accessible to students or parents logged in to their own account. Data added to PowerSchool is visible to the district office, the school, parents and students,

PowerSchool was purchased by Apple Inc. on March 13, 2001. On May 25, 2006, Apple Inc. and Pearson Education announced that Pearson was to acquire PowerSchool, “Apple’s award-winning student information systems (SIS) division. Once a school district purchases PowerSchool, accounts can be set up for both teachers and parents. PowerSchool makes it easy for teachers to record grades, take attendance, and check student profiles. Also, it’s convenient for parents to check all of their child’s grades as soon as they are posted.”

Our first training sessions took place Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at the Advance Technology Center in Edmonton.  Alexander, Alexis, O’Chiese & Sunchild Schools all participated in the training and also provided excellent feedback and reccomendations for their data base.

We are excited to see the outcomes of this new technology and how it will help improve reporting and overall student success!

The next training session will take place in April of 2014. Information posted soon!

Summary Report by Tracey Poitras-Collins, Project Manager

Greetings,

The results of our student, parent, and teacher surveys are providing us with some data to show that we are making a positive difference in their schools.

In phase one, we met with schools to learn about their education needs that the First Nation Student Success Program could address. Having completed the schools success plans, we learned that long-term data on student achievement, attendance and completion rates were needed to continue to guide us in our planning efforts,

We continue to meet with each of the five schools to maintain their three year school success plans.

The five schools are all using the Fountas and Pinnell assessment and intervention programs for the k-9 to address reading and comprehension. In year three of phase one, we have introduced writing and balanced literacy. We have established literacy baseline using the Fountas and Pinnell benchmark program and the provincial achievement tests. We have used the YTC math assessment program to identify learning gaps in mathematics and have revealed huge gaps that must be addressed. We are focusing on mathematics and student retention for the second phase of this project.

We have partnered with the Canadian Education Association’s endeavors to address student retention to begin identifying best practices. We have developed a student leadership program where high school students are encouraged to plan and deliver a youth conference that is only for our participating schools.

School administrators, teachers and teacher assistants are able to meet on a regular basis and support each other.

The college has always had an Elder’s Advisory Council that include knowledge keepers to guide the decision making here at the college.

Parents/guardians and community members have provided input into this proposal through the hosting of community meetings and completion of school surveys. We held meetings in each of the schools that have been involved and plan to host evening sessions with community Elders.

Our February Newsletter 2014 has highlights from each respective school. Download newsletter here: http://ytcfnssp.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/YTC-FNSSP-Newsletter-03.04.14-FINAL1.pdf

We will continue to keep our communities informed and engaged. Hiy hiy!

Tracey
